Just because you are playing internet backgammon from the privacy and comfort of your own home, does not mean that you can forget your manners when playing against others. The virtual world of internet backgammon sometimes makes us presume that since our opponents can’t see us, we don't need to remember our etiquette. However, the exact opposite is true.
First off, don't forget to greet your opponent before settling down to a game. A simple 'hi' or an introduction and 'good luck' is more than enough, but will set the game off to a friendly start. When you're finished your game of internet backgammon, greet your opponents and congratulate them on a successful game if you didn't win. The chat feature, however, should not be abused, so don't distract your opponent with idle chit-chat that may make him lose concentration during the game.
A particularly bad habit is to make a snide remark or an online chortle if your opponent has a bad roll. There is nothing worse in internet backgammon than a player who gloats in the other's misfortune. Remember, that tomorrow it could be you having a bad run of luck. Finally, make your moves within a reasonable space of time. We're not saying that you need to rush your game without thinking about your moves, but it is bad manners to keep the opponent waiting for no good reason. Considering the other players and respecting the chat features will ensure a pleasant gaming experience for all. |
