Over the years, backgammon has become very popular, and has developed several versions throughout the world. Mexican backgammon is very similar to regular backgammon, but with a few variations in the rules.
The board is set up in the same way as in standard backgammon and the players move round the board exactly the same.
However, one difference is that when a player rolls a double, as well as getting double the moves (so on a double 6, you can move your checkers four times six points), you also get to roll a second time.
The main difference in Mexican backgammon is rolling a 'Mexican' or a one and a two. When this happens, you play the move, and subsequently can choose any double roll you would like, and play that move too. You can then roll once more. This is very similar to Acey-deucey, another type of backgammon. Therefore, in Mexican backgammon, the worst possible roll of the dice becomes the most sought-after.
Another complication is that when you are caught on the bar and trying to re-enter the game, you must enter on the lowest number rolled. So if you throw a four and a one, you can only enter on the one - if this is blocked by your opponent, you will have to wait another turn.
There is no doubling cube in Mexican backgammon and also no extra points for a gammon or a backgammon.
So now you know the rules of Mexican backgammon, it's time to start playing. |
