What is a Freeroll Backgammon Tournament?

Hi, please excuse my ignorance: I’ve come across postings that give information about freeroll tourneys. Could somebody please explain what these are? Is tourney short for tournament?

You are quite right. A tourney is a tournament, or a backgammon tournament in this case. A freeroll tourney refers to an event that is played out in tournament style among a number of players. In general, the players have free entry into the event (ie. they don’t need to pay a joining fee). Most of the time, players stand in line to win cash at the end of the backgammon tournament. However, it is not unheard of for the tournament organizers to offer alternative prizes such as entries into other tournaments or other types of prizes.

Another thing to bear in mind: Not all freeroll tournaments are actually ‘free’. Sometimes participants need to pay with frequent player points that they have accumulated by playing at a particular backgammon site. These are also referred to as freerollers although I wouldn’t call these kinds of tournaments quite free.

One thing is for sure though – backgammon tournaments are exciting and a nice way to make a tidy sum if you are lucky (and skillful) enough to win the event.
