Using the backgammon doubling cube is a relatively new development in the ancient backgammon board game. The doubling cube first appeared in American casinos in the 1920's and has become an integral feature of many backgammon games.
The difference between the doubling cube and regular backgammon dice is easily recognizable. Instead of the regular dice number, the doubling cube is numbered 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, and 64. It is also larger than the regular backgammon dice. Using the backgammon doubling cube serves two main purposes in the game: it is used to indicate an increase in the amount of stakes gambled, and it also is used to show which player is allowed to offer the next double i.e doubling of stakes..
The doubling cube is placed in a central position between the players. Using the backgammon doubling cube involves the player who has the right to offer the double, turning the cube over to display its next higher value. If the opposing player agrees to continue the game at doubled stakes, they move the cube to their side of the board and take control of it, and they have the right to make the next doubling offer. If a player does not wish to take the doubling cube, they resign the game at current stakes.
Using the backgammon doubling cube has become a major element in backgammon gambling. Calculations are made to determine which situations warrant the player accepting the offer of a double, and when it makes sense to decline. These calculations are based on the disparity in the points count between the players. |
