Backgammon players have been using the backgammon doubling cube for some 80 years and so it can be considered a relatively new development in this ancient game. For thousands of years players have been attracted by the challenge and excitement of the backgammon board game, and using the backgammon doubling cube has become essentially a way to raise the tension of the game by increasing the stakes, and thereby increase interest. Also, the more players have at stake, the better they are likely to play.
There is no chance of getting the doubling cube confused with the regular backgammon dice since it is somewhat larger, and its numbering is totally different. Instead of the standard one to six numbering, the doubling carries the numbers 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, and 64. The rules of using the backgammon doubling cube it to be positioned centrally between the players. When a player’s turn comes round, they may choose to offer the doubling cube to their opponent. They indicate this offer by turning the doubling cube to its next higher value and presenting it to their opponent. The opponent may accept the offer of the double and continue playing at increased stakes, or they can decline the offer and resign from the game at the current stakes.
The skills of using the backgammon doubling cube revolves around knowing when it is in your interest to offer the cube to an opponent, and when such an offer should be accepted or rejected. The lead one player has over their opponent is a significant element in doubling decisions, with calculations of the probabilities of winning the game shaping the players’ decisions. |
