If you're new to backgammon, you're probably unsure of how to go about using the backgammon doubling cube. The following information will give you some basic pointers on how the cube works, along with how you can use it to strengthen your position in a game of backgammon.
The cube is probably the most misunderstood part of the backgammon game. Using the backgammon doubling cube presents several challenges to amateur players. When should you offer the cube to your opponent? When should you increase the wager on a game and at what stage should you use the cube to double your opponent out of the game?
Simply put, the cube should be used to your full advantage. This means you need to start using the backgammon doubling cube to up the stakes when you feel you have a good chance of winning the game. If you're in a weaker position than your opponent and believe you are less likely to win, you should decline the cube when it is offered to you so that you can conserve your funds for the next game.
Using the backgammon doubling cube in a last roll situation can be difficult for new players because your use of the cube will have a strong bearing on the result of the game . If you have two checkers left to bear off the board and your opponent has just one, you can end the game by using the doubling cube to force your opponent to forfeit. This can only be done however if you feel you can win. If so, offer the cube to your opponent before you take your turn. If your opponent offers you the cube in a last roll situation, you should accept it if you are confident that you have a 25 percent chance of winning. |
