There is no shortage of tips for backgammon available online and offline. Perhaps a small selection will wet your appetite to go on and acquire additional tips for backgammon to improve your game.
One of the most commonly heard backgammon sayings is “if in doubt hit”. What this backgammon guideline means to say is that when you are not sure of what is the best move to make, hitting one of your opponent’s blots is almost invariably the preferred option. However, like all tips for backgammon, this advice should be taken with discrimination. If you center your game on hitting opposing blots, it is not unlikely that you will end up leaving your own checkers open to hits from your opponent. Thus it makes good sense to spread your checkers out as widely as possible pair them together before launching your strikes.
Other popular tips for backgammon place the emphasis on building a prime. One you have placed two or more checkers on a point they can no longer be hit. By forming a chain of points you can blockade the other player’s checkers and thus greatly diminish their chances of being the first to bear off all their checkers and win the game.
Pieces of advice for improving your backgammon also relate to preferred starting positions. While some writers of backgammon tips advocate trying to take the sixth point, others recommend as soon as possible trying to move checkers to the second and third points to block in the two checkers your opponent has initially positioned in your home board. |
