People have found the time to play board games since the very beginnings of recorded civilization. This is surely indicative that some basic human needs are being met when we sit down to play board games.
First of all when people come together to play board games, they are taking part in what is essentially a social activity. True, it is now possible to play board games online, for example, playing backgammon against a computerized component. However, for the vast majority of cases, people are playing against a human opponent, even though the opponent may be at the other end of an ADSL line. The chat as people play together is socially as important as the results of the game in understanding what brings people together to play board games.
Certainly when most people play they are hoping to win, especially when some sum of money is at stake and they have an additional motivation to play well. However, there is also the felling of excitement derived from the course of the play. Thus, although it may be interesting to watch other backgammon players moving their counters and throwing the dice, there is no comparison with the feelings of being personally involved in the game.
Board games also provide an intellectual challenge. The winner of the backgammon game is invariably the player who is able to think out moves in advance and develop a winning strategy, while at the same time understanding their opponent’s tactics and anticipating their likely moves. |
