Every advanced backgammon player was once a beginner, which shows that it's always possible to improve your game. However, if you play backgammon on a beginner level and are thinking about trying out some more advanced backgammon play there are a couple things you should know first.
Advanced backgammon play is a lot more extreme than backgammon for beginners. Players move faster, they have much keener strategy and they are much more competitive. Because advanced players have more experience with the game they are able to make decisions much more quickly - they can visualize every play within a few seconds and see what beginners may not. As a result, the pace of advanced backgammon play is a great deal faster than beginner play. During your first few advanced backgammon games you may be shocked by the rate at which your opponents throw the dice and make their move. Don't worry - you too will gain this speed with practice.
Additionally, the strategy of advanced players is much more developed. These players have mastered anchoring and blocking and many even have memorized the best opening moves. There are books on the subject of backgammon strategy and a wealth of websites on the subject. The best you can do is study up and you will learn advanced strategic moves that you can try on your opponent.
Finally, advanced backgammon play is much more competitive with more frequent play for money. Practice all you can and give it a try and you'll get into the advanced backgammon mentality as well! |
