I’m an online backgammon newbie and I have noticed all the different ways there are to play online—tournaments, one-on-one games, chouette, money games, free games, not to mention all the different backgammon variations. Do people have any preferences or reasons why it’s better to play one way than another?

Personally, I like to play in online tournaments. The prizes are bigger and the competition is much more exciting. Low entry-fee tournaments are great because from only around five dollars you can win a lot of money, especially if a lot of people enter the tournament. I also think that online tournaments are a good way to improve your skills for live backgammon tournaments. The doubling cube is used a lot more in tournaments and it’s a good way to get used to playing with it effectively.

It really depends on what you are looking for. I like to use free tutorial programs like Gnubg to improve my game and then I rate my improvement by playing one on one free games online. I don’t really like to play for money because for me backgammon is just a fun hobby and I don’t want to bring gambling into it.

I would have to agree that tournaments are the most exciting way to play backgammon online. However, you don’t always have the time to play in a tournament or the money. Playing one on one games are nice because you can play a quick game when you don’t have a lot of time or sometimes you can play for hours. No matter what the time of day you can get online and play a one-on-one game and it’s great.
