While many articles provide excellent advice on best backgammon strategy, only through playing experience, and through the inner senses certain skilled players develop, is it possible to know which is the best backgammon strategy to apply in each particular situation.
For instance, at the start of the backgammon game, it is recommended to occupy certain key points that are useful for building a prime or blockade; the fourth point in the home board is frequently suggested as a good point to take. As the game progresses, the best backgammon strategy may well be to establish anchors by positioning two or more checkers to occupy key points in the opponent's home board area. This impedes the other player's freedom of checker movement, and while this is something you will want to do whenever the opportunity presents itself, it is a particularly good move to make if the opponent has a lead and when they are trying to bear off their checkers.
For novice players, it is often stated that the best backgammon strategy to follow when in doubt what move to take is to hit one of the opponent's blots whenever the opportunity presents itself. The advantages are that this can disrupt the opponent's strategy and take up their time bringing the hit checkers back into play.
Backgammon gambling is another area where the right approach to follow depends on a correct analysis of the state of play. For instance, a player with a high probability of being able to bear off all their checkers does well to offer or accept an offer of the doubling cube. |
