If you're a new backgammon player, you'll be trying to make the most out of the backgammon resources available to you. While playing games via free software is highly recommended, you will also need to learn how to add a strategic component to your game. This is where the advice of experienced backgammon players and the author of a sound backgammon handbook comes in handy.
A commonly recommended backgammon handbook for beginners is "Backgammon" by Paul David Magriel Jnr. This book is a little older than some of today's more recent volumes but this goes to show that quality lasts. Few other books are able to compete with the simple instructions given in “Backgammon” and the diagrams used to illustrate each point. If you're new to the game, this book assumes you don't even know what a backgammon board looks like, so this is a great way to get started.
If you're looking for a less in-depth backgammon handbook and for more of an overview, you may be interested in perusing the "Backgammon Instruction Book" by Suzanne Goldbert and Robert Hamilton. This is one of the best books at explaining the history of the game and how it was popularized right up until the present day.
You can find a useful backgammon handbook at online bookstores and retail stores all over the world. You can also check with second hand stores where you will often find a treasured volume hidden amongst the shelves. And remember, the money you spend on your books should be viewed as an investment. You never know when you might win a large amount of cash at an online tournament simply because you've been a good backgammon student! |
