The backgammon set has been with us for an amazing five thousand years plus, making it a leading candidate as the ancestor of all board games. Although the materials used in the backgammon set have changed radically from stone and clay to plastic, the look has been preserved.
All the backgammon boards today follow the standard pattern of 24 narrow triangular divisions, or points. The points are further divided into groups of six known as quadrants. Down the center of the board a ridge divides the quadrants into two sets of home and outer areas. This ridge is called the bar and it is the place where hit counters are first positioned. Traditionally the points are colored alternately black and white.
The introduction of virtual backgammon has given a radical new look to the backgammon set. The wonders of modern computer graphics provide a backgammon set download in 3-D available for download to your personal computer. These virtual games sets can look as attractive as some of the more expensive sets on the market. They also have the advantage of added audio-visual elements that give the game a new image that is particularly attractive to the younger generation of players. The moving of the counters via mouse and keyboard clicks has also radically transformed the feel of the game, although that special backgammon combination of strategy with the random dice throw outcome has been preserved and even enhanced by the introduction of virtual backgammon sets. |
