The ease with which most people manage to learn the backgammon game rules is probably one of the reasons why this board game has been with us for over five thousand years and not shared the fate of many other ancient games only known to archaeologists today. The fact that people of all ages, especially children, have no difficulties mastering the backgammon game rules, testifies to their logic and simplicity.
The backgammon game rules lay out the objective of the game, the arrangement of the checkers at the start of the game, the throwing of the dice and how the checkers can be moved in response to the results, and every other aspect of the game. Although these rules were first printed in the English speaking world in the 1740’s their origins go back to the beginnings of the backgammon board game in the Middle East. The spread of the game around the world has led to some variations in the backgammon game rules between different regions, but not to the extent that a player in one country, could not quickly master how the game is player in another country. The objective of the game, to be the first player able to remove all their checkers from the board (bearing off), also serves as a uniting factor between the different backgammon variants.
With the development of Internet backgammon and the popularity of these online gaming sites, there are more opportunities to learn how to play backgammon today than in any previous period. Backgammon rules are prominently displayed on all these sites, and the backgammon software is configured in a way that prevents players from making illegal moves. |
