I frequently hear backgammon newbies asking the same question - how can I learn about backgammon strategy? This is a very important question, which is why I would like to share a little tip that I like to call "The 3 Bs" - boldness, backgame and blockades.
The secret to succeeding in the game of backgammon is boldness. The worst strategy is to play it safe by moving slowly in order to make sure all of your checkers remain covered. You have to be bold if you want to win a game of backgammon. Split your checkers in order to pull ahead or there's no way you'll win in the straight race. Don't worry about leaving checkers exposed - if the odds work against you and you are hit, you can always switch over to the second "B" - backgame.
Backgame strategy is strategy within your opponent's side of the board. Creating anchors in your opponent's home board you hinder his ability to enter his checkers and bear off. An anchor is a made point with two or more of your checkers on it that your opponent cannot land on.
You can also create made points in other areas of the board and use this as a strategy. A series of made points in a row is called a blockade and can be very hard for your opponent to pass. In fact, if you have six made points in a row it is impossible for your opponent to cross over. Filling your home board with a prime of six made points can trap your opponent on the bar and give you time to get any remaining checkers home and start bearing off.
Implement "The 3 Bs" and you will be well on your way to backgammon success! |
