The backgammon turn or move lies at the heart of the game. Each backgammon player takes their backgammon turn alternatively, the term applying to whatever action they take when it is their turn, or time to move. They can use their turn to move a checker forward, hit an opponent’s checker, offer the opponent the doubling cube or take any of the other actions permitted in the backgammon rules.
Now for some common backgammon turn situations that explain how the term is used. Backgammon is about moving checkers, with the aim being to be the first player able to bear all their checkers off the board. The backgammon turn is determined by the throw of the dice. At the commencement of a game every player throws a die (the single of dice). The player who gets the highest score is the one awarded the right to make the first move according to the numbers on both the dice thrown. If, by chance both players throw the same numbers at the start of the game it cannot be determined which of them has right to start the game, thee dice must be thrown again until different numbers come up.
Many other instances of backgammon turns occur in the course of the game. For example, what happens if a player makes a dice throw of two and four? They can use their turn to move one of their checkers six points, or move one checker two point and another checker four points, and whatever other combinations this dice throw permits. At every point of the game, turns or moves need to be quickly considered and made. |
