Backgammon, one of the oldest games known to mankind, has developed into many variations over the years. Tabula, the ancient Greek version of backgammon, is one of the oldest of these many variations. The tabula variation of backgammon is similar to regular backgammon and should be a breeze to pick up if you already know the rules of the traditional game.
There are three major differences between regular backgammon and the tabula variation of backgammon. Tabula is played with three dice, instead of the usual two. In tabula, players also start with all of their checkers off of the board. Both players enter into the same quadrant, move in the same direction and finish by bearing off from the same quadrant. Aside from these differences, the games are played the same. The rules of hitting are the same in both games. The rules of how to re-enter the game from the bar are the same (though in Tabula both players enter to the same quarter you enter at the beginning of the game). The rules for bearing off are also the same as the normal game in the tabula variation of backgammon. Made points and blockades apply here as well.
To begin the game of tabula backgammon, each player rolls one die. The player with the highest roll goes first, rolling all three dice. They can then enter three checkers to the board. Then it is the next players turn to roll. If you have a backgammon board, expand your horizons with the tabula variation of backgammon today! |
