Once a backgammon player proceeds beyond the novice level, and becomes a serious player for stakes, acquiring advanced backgammon play strategies becomes essential to their success. Fortunately, today’s players have made opportunities to learn their advanced backgammon play tactics through membership in clubs, attendance at and participation in tournaments both online and offline, and through reading the extensive backgammon literature.
So what are the kinds of advanced backgammon play guidelines that are popular with today’s players? One of the favorite advanced backgammon play approaches centers on the building of blocks to trap the opponent’s counters. The rules of backgammon are that while a single counter, or blot, can be hit by an opposing counter, once two counters are placed on a point they are immune from being hit. A group of such counters can be arranged to trap opposing counters behind them and so frustrate the opposing playing from achieving the key backgammon objective of being the first player to bring all their counters home.
Other frequently adopted skilled backgammon moves revolve around seizing key points at the opening stage of the game. For example, taking the fifth point is considered a sound policy for protecting yourself against enemy hits. It forces your opponent to adopt a defensive strategy. This is also considered an excellent position from where you can build a block and at the same time, it provides a strong base from where you can hit the opponent’s blots. In a similar vein, the fourth point is also reckoned a fine strategic position to occupy in the game’s opening stages. |
