One of the sweetest victories in a game of backgammon is when the player manages to win by a gammon or backgammon. Scoring a backgammon essentially means that the player has managed to bear off all his checkers from the board, while the opponent has not managed to bear off any of his own and also still has checkers on the bar or in his home board. If the player succeeds in scoring a backgammon, he wins three times the value of the doubling cube.
Another version of scoring a backgammon is called scoring a gammon. This is similar to a backgammon, except that the opponent simply does not manage to bear off any checkers from his own board. In this case, the player wins double the amount of stakes shown on the doubling cube.
A player can aim to score a backgammon by utilizing a number of different strategies during his game. One of these involves creating a six prime block on the board so that the other player cannot advance and therefore is prevented from bearing his checkers off from the board. Scoring a backgammon is not as simple as it sounds and players sometimes need to take substantial risks for this strategy to work. Sometimes these risks don't pay off and players are forced to make quick decisions regarding the rest of their gaming strategy. Some players resort to offering a double when they see that their bid for a backgammon is not going to work, which secures them at least one win. |
