It attracts players of a wide age range, and this all goes to prove that how to play backgammon is a skill that players very quickly pick up. The basic knowledge needed to know how to play backgammon can be divided into understanding the layout of the board, appreciating the objective of the game, and learning how to move the checkers.

The backgammon board is already familiar to most new players with its division into twenty-four narrow triangular sections or points, and further divisions into home and outer areas for each player. Each player has fifteen checkers, with the object of the game being to become the first one able to remove, or "bear off" all their checkers from the backgammon board.

How to move checkers according to the results of a dice throw is also quickly learned.
