Today, millions of people around the world play Blackjack. From land-based casinos to online casinos, the challenging card game is a well-known favorite of casino gamblers and gaming enthusiasts who enjoy its simple structure and exciting mix of skill and luck. Blackjack is the quintessential head-to-head card game that pits player against dealer in a race to hit the point total 21 without busting over the limit.
People began to play Blackjack three centuries ago in 18th-century France where the game began as vingt-et-un, French for "twenty-one." To this day, the game still retains the nickname "21 Blackjack" which stems both from its early title as well as from the fact that the game's central number is indeed 21.
The name "Blackjack" was first used to describe the game when people began to play Blackjack in America. When the French card game first arrived Stateside, it was not a popular import. Casinos struggled to get players hooked on the game, and so they offered bonuses to casino visitors to encourage them to play Blackjack. Casinos promised visitors a generous 10 to 1 payout if they could score an Ace of Spades and a black Jack on the initial deal. The black Jack could be either the Jack of Clubs or the Jack of Spades, thus giving the game the moniker it's known as today: Blackjack.
Today, people play Blackjack under a wide variety of different titles, including the game's other famous name, Pontoon. |
