| Hi, I’m new to the game of backgammon and am feeling my way around the different concepts and strategies. One of them is pip counting – something that looks completely out of my league! Can somebody please explain what pip counting is and why we do it? |

| Consider backgammon as a race. All players begin with 167 pips and the first one to reach zero pips is the winner of the race. Counting your pips is an important strategy that you will learn over time. It really is not as complicated as it looks and you can find ample information on the internet or in backgammon books to explain the process in a simplified form. You need to know how to count pips because it gives you a clear indication of where you stand in a backgammon game and what cube decisions to make. For example, it helps you with doubling decisions (ie. whether to accept or not). It also affects your decisions regarding checker play. |
