The fees players pay to join online poker games and the rake (a percentage) the site owners are entitled to take from the pots, are the main sources of finance for the online poker gaming rooms. In online poker parlance, the fee paid to take part in a poker tournament is called the online poker tournament buy-in.
Paying the online poker tournament buy-in entitles you to receive a stack of chips that are used for the poker gambling. In regular games, once you have bought your chips, you are not permitted to buy additional chips for the duration of the game. However, there are what are called re-buy tournaments where you are able to make an extra online poker tournament buy-in during a certain period. The rules for re-buying vary between sites and tournaments; for example, it may be restricted to those players in the lowest ranking positions.
In view of the number of poker games on offer online, it is well worthwhile comparing the online poker tournament buy-in rates quoted by different sites. As a guide to the amount you might expect to pay, usually these fees represent a tenth of the pot for tournaments at a lower stake level, and for higher stake tournaments the entry fees are normally less. There are also special tournaments with non-standard entry fees. For example, entry may be offered free of charge for players who have accumulated sufficient points from playing on the site. |
