If you're new to the internet poker world, you may be unfamiliar with what an online poker rake is. To understand how a rake is used in the online poker industry, let's consider how a poker site makes its money.
Generally there are two types of fee an internet poker site will charge as a way of earning revenue. The first type of fee applies to poker tournaments and is paid by each player who enters into an event hosted by their poker site. The second type of fee is known as an online poker rake, which is generated by ring games. This means that no matter what type of real money game you prefer to play, you are contributing to the site's revenue in the form of a basic fee.
Every internet poker site has a specific online poker rake schedule. This is usually around ten percent of the total of the pot for each poker game hosted. The exact amounts of the rake vary from site to site but are usually no more than $3 on any game with stakes of $5 to $10. Lower stake games, for example, $1 to $2 games incur a rake of around $1.25.
In many cases, an online poker rake is not charged if all players fold and retire from the game before the flop occurs. If just a few players participate in a game, a lower rake may be charged. Information on each poker site's rake schedule should be prominently displayed on the site along with the circumstances under which a rake may be waived on a poker game. |
