Download Backgammon SoftwareFor thousands of years there hasn't been s change in the Backgammon Set Up although in the 1920's the doubling cube was added to the game as well as several refinements in the rules that had been in use since the 1700's. Regardless, the Backgammon Set Up is less important than the first move. Thanks to computer simulations every possible combination of the dice has been played out and analyzed to see how it would affect the out come of the game. These "first moves" can easily be memorized.

Because of the unusual layout of the checkers in the Backgammon Set Up some moves are more obvious than others. The debate has always centered around which locations on the backgammon board (called: "points") are more important and which are worthwhile obtaining and holding. The current thinking is that backgammon is a game governed by mathematical formulas, therefore, the "best" moves and "best" locations should be determined by quick calculations rather than by how the backgammon board "looks" or "feels" to a player.

For the beginning player, however, just remembering where the checkers are placed in the Backgammon Set Up can be a challenge. Once again, computer technology can save the day since the board is set up automatically whether you play on line backgammon or download backgammon from one of the many sites. As in anything, one's enjoyment can be enhanced but learning a little bit about the subject. There are many sources available to advice every level of player from the novice to the professional and it should be noted that even professionals seek advice from champion players. Therefore, to sum up: "play", "learn" and "enjoy".
