Not knowing the backgammon setup by heart is the true mark of an amateur. But there is no need to become confused by the subject. Read on to understand everything you need to know about the backgammon setup.
Setting up the board is the first part of every game, and an avid backgammon player is expected to do it swiftly and confidently. The key is do it several times on your own. Get a backgammon board and arrange the checkers in place according to this article, then take them out of order, and do it again. Repeat until you no longer have to refer to this article. Then you will have the confidence it takes to do it effortlessly. And if you ever forget something, just remember that your starting position should mirror your opponents. When in doubt, set up a different part of the backgammon board that you are sure about it, and wait for your opponent to setup the part of the board you are unsure about, then simply mirror his checkers with your own.
To learn how to setup the backgammon board, you must know how to count backgammon points. When you look at the board, the rightmost point on the part of the board closest to you is called the 1-point. The numbers then advance by moving clockwise. So the point immediately to the left of the 1-point is the 2-point, and the point in front of the 1-point is the 24-point. To start your backgammon setup, place five checkers one your 6-point. Then place three checkers on your 8-point, five on the 13-point, the two remaining checkers on the 24-point, and you are now done setting up the backgammon board! |
