Backgammon has many forms. The game changes drastically depending on the skill level of the players. It's interesting to watch games of intermediate and advanced players. One thing that's especially interesting not only is to observe, but to master defensive strategy in backgammon.
Defensive strategy in backgammon can come in many forms. One thing that's good to do in the beginning is to leave yourself with many options so that if your opponent gets aggressive you can dodge his moves. Try not to put too may checkers on your low points in the initial part of the game. Stay especially clear of points one and two. Placing checkers there may limit your choices of where to move etc. as the game progresses. Remember that defensive strategy in backgammon does not always mean that you have to be really behind in the game against your opponent. You can play just one turn behind and it can be really good. For instance, if your opponent makes an anchor, it's important for you to make an anchor as well.
Defensive strategy in backgammon can be a great way to fake out your opponent. You can play defensively for a while and at the same time be slowly setting up the board for a very aggressive plan. Make your player think you are weak and then all of a sudden become the aggressor towards the end of the game once your checkers are placed the way you planned. This switch in roles often times leads to victory. |
