Personally, the most annoying thing that a person can do in a game of backgammon is move their checkers around the board, demonstrating all the possible moves for a given roll, before deciding on one. For starters, it makes it very difficult for me to not suspect cheating—after all, it isn’t easy to keep track of the original positions of the checkers when your opponent is flying them all around the board. Aside from that, it’s just annoying! So stop moving your checkers all around the board people! If you pick a checker up and put it down that’s final! Just wanted to vent.

You know, if this is something to bother you then it is possible to have a discussion with your opponent before the game starts and agree on a rule that states that once a checker has been placed in a new position then the move is final.

The rule is that the checkers can be moved and your play can be changed until you pick up the dice. That is the rule so it is completely fair for your opponent to use the rule. If you have a problem then just find a new opponent. Or maybe you can do the same thing to him and he’ll see how annoying it is and stop. Who knows?

I had no idea that there wasn’t a rule outlawing this sort of behavior! I had been playing under the assumption that once a checker has been moved the move is final. Maybe now I can take my time! (to the original poster: sorry, I’ll try not to play against you!)
