| Recently I have been trying different strategies in my backgammon play and I have found one that I like a lot. I have been leaving open blots early in the game, all around the board. When my opponent hits me, I use these blots to come back around through my opponent’s home board and try to hit their checkers on my way. I have found this strategy to be much more effective than being safe and keeping all my checkers paired as I move around the board to the finish. Is this a good strategy? |

You are right in your realization that being safe and keeping all your checkers covered as you move around the game is not the best strategy. Being bold is the best way to win a game of backgammon. It is good that you are leaving blots and not worrying about getting hit, but I think that there is a strategy in between your strategy and being safe.
In my opinion, you should never leave blots open with the intention of being hit unless you are already falling behind in the game. A backgame, which is what you are describing, is a good strategy for when you are behind but isn’t always the best option from the beginning. I think you should rush your checkers forward, trying to get them to your home board quickly. Leave blots open with the hope that your opponent won’t be able to hit you. However, if you are hit then you can resume your backgame strategy. |
