Playing internet backgammon is exactly the same as playing the game live. Many players say that playing online is more exciting and they actually prefer to play this way. The difference with playing online is that there are more people to compete from all levels of expertise. There are two main ways of playing internet backgammon. You can make a new table, therefore determining the rules as well as the stake, and then simply sit back and wait for opponents. On the other hand you can enter a table that has already been made by someone else. In either case the winner takes the money. Regarding the rules there is a choice between a series and a single type of game.

The aim of a series game is to be the winner of the majority of a specified number of games which is determined before play commences. The classical match is a 'series' match till three, and the winner is the player who is the first to win three lines. There is also the double line rule that has the value of two normal games.

With the single type each game is played independently. Irregardless whether or not you opened the table or not, if your opponent wins then he takes home the stake established prior to play.
