I consider myself an intermediate player after playing for quite a number of years. I have a Snowie rate of –5 to –8. The problem is that my checker rate would probably much better than this if it wasn’t for my lousy cube rate. Does anybody know of books or texts that will help me improve my cube rate?
Thanks a lot. |

Hi there,
There are a number of things that you can try. First off, if you haven’t done so already, take some time out to read (or reread) Kit Woolsey’s “The Backgammon Encyclopedia”. You should focus on the part about “Cube Reference Positions”.
Another way to go about it is to find articles on cubing on the Backgammon Galore website. I know that there is at least one basic but extremely essential article on the subject that you are looking for.
I think someone else mentioned a while back that Bill Robertie’s book, “501 Essential Backgammon Problems” could be helpful. I’d also try out Paul Lamford’s “101 Backgammon Puzzles” as a supplementary text.
Another approach that I’ve seen come up on backgammon forums in response to those seeking help about cube rates involves constant analyzing and re-analyzing all of your games from as far back as you can and taking an honest look at all your own mistakes. Consider elements such as common sense, score and opponent and consider all the options regarding cubing/not cubing and taking/not taking. And a final piece of advice: Learn to separate your emotions from your decisions that you make on the backgammon board. This can go a long way in helping you improve your cube rate. Hope this helps… |
