I used to think that I was pretty good at backgammon until I started playing online. Now I am getting crushed time and again by players who aren’t even that advanced and my rating has be placed pretty low on the charts. I want to continue playing online, but I need to improve my game. What would you all suggest? Should I read some books? Buy one of those backgammon tutorial programs? Please let me know any helpful suggestions you can think of. Thanks.

You should read “Backgammon” by Paul Magriel or any of Robertie’s books. These guys are great teachers of strategy and reading their books is sure to improve your game. There are also a lot of backgammon articles on the net by Robertie and other top players as well as a wealth of information on backgammon strategy from other sources. Just do a little bit of searching with google and you should find a ton of stuff.

I think that the best way to improve your game is to download a backgammon tutorial program, as you said. You can find free programs, such as Gnubg. These programs are great because they will analyze your game for you and give you pointers on how you can improve and tell you what you are doing wrong and how to fix it. They can tell you the best move in any given situation and a lot of other useful information. I would recommend these programs 100%!
