While the game of backgammon may appear to be complicated, it is actually quite easy to learn how to play backgammon. First you need an opponent. It is helpful to find a friend that already knows how to play backgammon so that they can help you along. First you set up the board. A backgammon board is made up of 4 quadrants with triangular points and a bar in the center. Each player has fifteen checkers, organized around the board.
The object of backgammon is to get all of your checkers off of the board before your opponent. This is achieved by moving your checkers in a counterclockwise direction around the board to open points. Once you understand this objective you are well on your way to understanding how to play backgammon.
Roll two dice in order to move your checkers around the board. With each roll you may choose to move two checkers - one for each die - or to add the dice together and move one checker the total amount. A double roll counts twice!
You cannot land on points with two or more opposing checkers. If you land on a blot, or single opposing checker on a point, place the blot on the bar setting back your opponent's game.
Once all your checkers arrive at the end, known as your home board, start bearing them off the board. Roll dice in exact amounts to remove checkers from the board.
Now you know the basics of how to play backgammon! Grab a friend and play or practice with online backgammon! |
