The other day I was met with an interesting experience while playing backgammon online. I was pretty far behind in the game, but I rolled double sixes and succeeded in bringing myself back into the game and reversing the situation so that now my opponent was losing. In the chat box, my opponent sent the words “nice roll”. I responded with “yes indeed it was”. My opponent then seemed to get a little upset at my response and told me that a simple “thank you” would have sufficed.
I guess my question is simply, why would someone feel the need to congratulate another player on a nice roll in the first place? Aside from that, what would the appropriate response to his “nice roll” have been? |

| I have been in situations like the one you have described more than once. It seems to me that you can never know how I person would like to be responded to on a comment like “nice roll” so it’s better not to say anything at all. I tend to keep chat to a minimum and not to chat at all unless the other player engages me first. After all, I’m here to play backgammon, not to have a conversation. I think that your response was fine so don’t worry about it and next time, just respond with a “thank you” or don’t say anything at all. Oh, and keep rolling those double sixes! |
