Could I be playing against BOTs?

I’ve been playing backgammon online for play money for awhile and am thinking about starting to play for real money but I’m concerned about playing unknowingly against BOTs. I’ve heard that it’s possible to hook programs like Snowie and GNU up to your computer so that they’ll play your games for you. We all know how difficult these programs can be to beat when set on high skill levels, so I really don’t want to end up having someone cheat me with a bot.

I don’t mind playing a bot if I’m aware of the situation and the bot is the appropriate skill level for me, but I just don’t wanna be screwed.

Can anyone tell me whether or not this is something that someone can do—hook up a bot to play backgammon for them? If it is, is this something that happens a lot?

I’m sure that it is possible for someone to hook up a bot to play for them, if they are incredibly good with programming and computers and don’t have the morals to keep them from hacking. However, this process is probably so complicated that most people aren’t doing it.

Aside from that, I think you can rest assured that even if players are hacking bots into backgammon servers, most of the servers will figure it out pretty quickly. Backgammon servers track every game and if they see that a player is playing in a superhuman fashion they will take action. These servers aren’t stupid—they want to protect you (their loyal customer) from fraud so that you’ll keep coming back and paying them money!
