When placing stakes on a game, backgammon money management allows each player to choose the appropriate stakes to play so that they do not exceed their bankroll. The bankroll is the amount of money each player is willing to lose in a given session. Backgammon budgeting has two goals. First, it ensures that a person's bankroll lasts the entire session of the game or in a series of games. Secondly, money management makes playing more fun by removing some of the stress involved in dealing with money. Backgammon money management can also be used to track an individual's betting history, how many series were won or lost and how much money was won or lost.

Most backgammon games are played in a Chouette, in which there are more than two players. Three or more players will compete for points or money over the same board. One player is the box and plays on a single board against all the other players who form a team led by a captain. The box means that the player on the board is the one in the most challenging position. Players will bet on the cubes played in the game, usually for stakes of 2 to 4 points. Sometimes the stakes are higher, 8 points is already much more risky.

Employing the use of Backgammon money budgeting does not mean that the risks are still not high - a bet is a bet. However, controlling losses and tracking wins creates a safer environment in which one can take these risks while still enjoying the game.
