I am wondering how clocks are used in backgammon tournaments. If the time is allotted as a certain amount for each play then what is the typical allotment per play? If there is a certain amount of time available for the whole game, what happens when the time runs out? Also, is the time reset after each game or does it stay the same for an entire match? Someone please explain!

Time is generally allotted based on a certain amount of minutes per point in a match. This time is usually around five minutes. For instance, if you are playing a 5-point match, the total time will be twenty-five minutes. After this time, there is generally an allotment of extra grace period time that can also range in length. However, it is generally only extremely slow players that have problems with the clock or feel stressed for time. The rules usually allow for plenty of time for players to throw the dice and make their play.

In a game that you are using a clock you can use the clock to your advantage if you are ahead in time. If you have a lot of time remaining, but your opponent is running out a time, a good tactic is to steer the game into a position that is more complicated for your opponent and will take him or her more moves to get out of in the hopes that his or her time will run out.
