For a serious backgammon player, one of the most important purchases will be when you buy a gammon board. Backgammon boards come in all shapes and sizes and for all budgets, from cheap travelling sets, to elaborately carved wooden ones.
If you are going to buy a gammon board, some of things to look out for are quality and consistency of the checkers, size and portability, and durability of the materials.
Many backgammon boards come in a folding carry case, which is a must if you plan to play away from home. The inside is often made of velour or suede with an outer leather case. If you are looking for a model to display at home, a larger wooden set could be more suitable.
There are two types of board, those with sewn points, and those with printed points. Printed points ensure a flatter playing surface. Handmade sets are obviously more expensive, but the craftsmanship involved is clear and is worth the extra for something you would put on display in your living room.
Remember that a quality backgammon board will give you years of use, so it is worth investing. When you buy a gammon board, make sure that it has all the components - 30 checkers, 4 dice, 2 rolling cups, a doubling cube and a rules booklet. |
