The object of a backgammon game is to get all your checkers into your home board and eventually bear them off. What is bearing of the backgammon board exactly? This is only possible when all your checkers are in your home board and you can then proceed to taking them off the board. To bear actually describes the action of moving the checkers. The dice still determine how quickly you can get all your checkers off, but strategy is also involved. The player still needs to make choices about which checkers to bear off first etc. bearing off the backgammon board is the last step before the game is won.

Some players can accomplish bearing all their checkers off the board before their opponent has all his or her checkers in their home board. This is called a gammon.
