Bearing off in backgammon is the all-important closing stage of the game. The first player manages to bear off, or remove from the board all their checkers, wins the game. Just as the player puts their efforts into bearing off their own checkers, so they also need to try to prevent the opposing player from bearing off their checkers.
As the stage of bearing off in backgammon is reached, the player needs to disengage from hitting and blocking the opposing players checkers. This is a period when special care is required. For example, while dismantling primes it is easy to leave a single checker or blot exposed to a hit from the opponent. Once one of your checkers has been sent to the bar, you need to devote your efforts to bringing the checker back into play. Such delays are particularly unwelcome for the interruption they cause during bearing off in backgammon. Since each player aims to be the first to bring their checkers home, such delays can cost a player the game.
As the player endeavors to move checkers to their home area, they hope for helpful dice throws such as double fives and double sixes. When at last through good tactics and helpful dice throws, a player has succeeded in bringing all their checkers into their home area, bearing off in backgammon goes through some of its most tense moments as the players need to get the right dice results to allow them to move each checker off the board. |
