| I was asked to be a tournament director at an upcoming backgammon tournament in my area. I think it seems like it could be fun, but really I have no idea what a tournament director’s job is. Does anyone know what I’d have to do? |

I’ve been a tournament director a couple of times and it can actually be fun, although stressful at times. As a tournament director it is your job to welcome people, help them through the registration process and answer any questions they may have. Once the tournament begins you need to be ready to answer any questions that may arise in the games—questions about rules or anything else. If there is no rule that applies to a situation that arises then it is your job to figure out the best solution possible that is the fairest solution you can come up with. Basically, it is your job to make sure the tournament goes smoothly and that everything goes according to plan.
If you plan to be a tournament director then you should definitely be a people person as you will have to be ready to talk to and help a lot of people, especially if it is a large tournament. The job can also be stressful if you have a lot of questions to address or if a player is not happy with a call that you make when they have a problem with their game. However, despite the stress that can be involved, being a tournament director can be fulfilling not to mention a great way to learn more about backgammon. |
