If you are new to the game of backgammon then you may understand the rules of the game but find that you still keep losing. All you need is an introduction to basic backgammon strategy and you'll find your game improving in no time.
Backgammon strategy is made up of offense and defense. Offensive strategy in backgammon refers mostly to the boldness and aggressiveness of your game. A good offensive strategy is to make bold moves early in the game, in order to push your checkers farther ahead than your opponent. Many beginners try to keep their checkers protected throughout the game, but if you make safe moves all the time you will never win the race.
Defensive backgammon strategy is also important to know about. Defensive strategy includes building blockades and anchors. As you probably know, a point has two or more of your checkers on it (a made point) is useless to your opponent. Rows of made points, or blockades, are an incredibly useful strategy as they can trap your opponent. A six point blockade, or prime, is impossible for your opponent to cross. Additionally, made points in your opponents home board, called anchors, hinder your opponent’s attempts at entering all his checkers to the home board and also create landing points for your own checkers, should you be hit.
These are a few tips for basic backgammon strategy. Practice these strategies, as a beginner, and you will be ready for more advanced strategy tips in no time. |
