If you're an avid online backgammon player than you may have already noticed a new phenomenon happening online: the merger of backgammon and poker communities. Many of the best online backgammon software providers are now including poker games with their software bundle - often poker games can be played concurrently with backgammon games. I like both games but what does this say about the backgammon community in general?
In the past many champion backgammon players were also skilled in other board games including chess. But not many made the huge leap to table card games. This trend is changing fast. Poker has become a huge business both on and offline. For many it's a way of life. It's certainly become a part of mainstream culture with celeb matches being shown nightly on TV. The variation Texas Hold’em has practically become a household word. And it seems backgammon players are also getting swept up in the hype.
There will always be purists but many mainstream backgammon players are expressing interest in poker and the software providers are starting to listen. The fact of the matter is community games like poker and backgammon have both found a large following on the net. it only makes sense that someone somewhere decided to try to bridge the two communities. Let's face it, after a few hours of nonstop backgammon it may be a refreshing break to get your eyes off the checkers and onto a deck of cards.
For those not interested they can stick to what they know but it seems the two online communities are starting to cross over and enjoy each other’s company. |
