I was wondering if anyone has ever put together a glossary of backgammon terms and if not, has anyone ever thought of doing this?
There a ton of backgammon terms that I am seeing in this group and in all of the resources I’ve been reading online that I just don’t understand.
Dancing, slotting, beaver… I just don’t get it! Someone help please! |

You will be happy to know that there are a ton of backgammon glossaries floating around the net. I’ll do my best to help you out now though…
DANCING is the name for when a player throws a roll that doesn’t succeed in allowing him to enter checkers from the bar. I know, it seems like a crazy name but there is a reason it’s called this (although I guess the reason is pretty silly). It’s called dancing or a dance because of the movement a player makes as he moves forward to bring his checker back into the game and then moves back again as he realizes that he is blocked from making the move.
SLOTTING is the word for a play in which you place a single checker on a point, creating a blot, with the intention of covering it on your next turn.
A BEAVER is the word for when a player immediately re-doubles after accepting a double. When someone re-doubles immediately on a beaver this is known as a raccoon. Immediate redoubling on a raccoon is called an otter.
Hope this has been of help. Any other words you have questions about can most likely be found in the following glossary:
