Backgammon game stakes are not set in stone as they can be manipulated according to your position in the game relative to your opponent's. This 'playing with the stake' is possible when you play backgammon with the doubling cube
Backgammon can be played as either a series of games where the two players are competing to reach a certain prearranged amount of points to win; or a set number of games and the player with the highest amount of points is the winner. One point is set at the begging of each game, and the doubling cube is placed on the bar at the start. There is no control over this cube by either player. When either you or your opponent feels that they have the advantage they may decide to use the doubling cube and raise the backgammon game stakes.
This is done during their turn before the dice are thrown therefore offering the double. Where the game goes is up to you from here; if you chose to reject this double your undoubled stake is lost and the game ends with your opponent as the winner. However, if you accept the double then the backgammon game stakes are doubled and you given the right of the doubling cube (also known as own the cube).
To make the game even more exciting, if after the initial double that your opponent announced you feel that you clearly have the advantage you may announce a redouble. This is where the previously doubled backgammon game stakes are doubled again, thereby making the original stake four times its original value. |
