I have just been playing backgammon for a few months but I’m loving it! I really want to know all the ins and outs of the game and different strategies that I can use. It seems like there is only so much I can learn by just playing the game and I’m looking for a better method of learning.

Can anyone recommend any good books for learning how to play backgammon? I’ve heard a lot about Magriel’s “Backgammon” but am a little skiddish about it because it was published in the 70s and I’m afraid it might be outdated.

There are a ton of great books on backgammon out there. However, I first want to tell you that playing the game is certainly the best way to learn. You will still need practice in order to master the strategies and techniques you learn. But backgammon books are certainly a good way to learn these strategies.

Paul Magriel’s book is an great book for you, although it was printed in 1974. Though some of the “answers” in the book might be outdated you can still learn about the ideas and thought process behind the game of backgammon and this information is worth everything! I think you can even find the book used on Amazon or eBay so you can save youself some money.

You should also try Walter Trice’s “Backgammon Boot Camp.” It is a more recent addition to the numerous books on the subject of backgammon and is much more up to date than Magriel’s book.

I would also recommend Robertie’s “Backgammon for Winners.” Though it doesn’t go into a huge amount of depth, it is a great book for beginners to get the gist of the game and of backgammon strategy.
