The backgammon board setup we are familiar with today is essentially the same backgammon arrangement that has been in use already for thousands of years. The biggest change in many respects has been the transformation of backgammon into a popular Internet game with the backgammon board setup taking on virtual dimensions.
The common, easily recognizable backgammon board setup elements are a flat-surfaced board that is divided into twenty four narrow triangular shaped sections, with an alternating color scheme distinguishing one section from its neighbor. Each of these sections is called a point, and groups of six points form distinct playing areas known as quadrants. A ledge runs down the center of the backgammon board and it divides the quadrants into home and outer playing areas for each player.
Each player is allocated fifteen circular counters or checkers and these are moved according to the results of the throw of a pair of die (or dice) thrown with a cylindrical shaped cup. In addition, a specially marked die, called the doubling cube, is used to keep a track of increasing stakes, and to indicate when a player wants to increase the stakes. Unlike the standard die number from one to six, the doubling cube is numbered 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, and 64.
The backgammon board setup for online backgammon duplicates all the traditional game elements in a high quality 3-D graphical reproduction. The backgammon software is available for download free of charge to the player’s computer. As soon as a game is initiated, the computer automatically sets up the board with all the checkers in their starting positions, and the game proceeds using the standard computer keyboard and mouse controls. |
