If you are new to backgammon, the first thing to learn is backgammon board set-up. Once you learn how to set up the backgammon board, the rest of the rules will fall into place.
When you open a backgammon board and lay it out you will notice that the board is divided into four quadrants. These quadrants are called your home board and out board and your opponents home board and out board. Each of these quadrants contains six triangular points of alternating colors. There are a total of twenty-four points. These points aid in backgammon set-up and are also the points by which you move your checkers around the board during the game. The first player to get all of their checkers around the board and borne off is the winner. Once you understand this concept you are ready to learn about backgammon set-up.
In order to set up a backgammon board you first need to number the points. Start from the outermost point of your home board and number the points from one to twenty-four. Your twenty-four point is the same as your opponent's one point and vice versa. Place two checkers on the twenty-four point, five checkers on the thirteen point, three checkers on the eight point and six checkers on the six point. Your opponent’s backgammon set-up will be a reflection of your own.
Now that you have your board set up you are ready to roll the dice and start playing! |
