Backgammon is the most ancient recorded game played by mankind and, because it is so old, there are countless backgammon variations. There is European backgammon, Turkish tavla, Greek tabula and more. This article discusses the games and culture surrounding American style backgammon.
American style backgammon is typically played by traditional backgammon rules (the rules you will find in most backgammon online games). There are several other "Americanized" versions of backgammon. One American style backgammon is American Acey-Deucy, which was made widely popular during World War I by the soldiers who played it all day in the trenches. It has remained popular to this day. This game begins with all of the checkers off the board. Opponent's must enter their checkers and move in opposite directions to bear off on the other side of the board.
Another aspect of American style backgammon is the culture that surrounds it. Backgammon is a popular game in America both online and off. Many Americans log on to backgammon servers on a daily basis and are frequent participants in online tournaments. However, the most sought after "trophy" by American backgammon enthusiasts is to be a winner in the American Backgammon Tour, which gives backgammon players the chance to play American style backgammon in tournaments scheduled in different American cities throughout the year. Every year a list of most valuable backgammon players is compiled based on these tours and it is very prestigious and exciting to find yourself on this list! |
