Today, when we are referring to backgammon setup, we may be referring to the backgammon setup of the traditional game where the opponents face each other across the backgammon board, or the new arrangement where the contest takes place over the Internet between two players or even between a player and a backgammon computer.
Focusing first of all on the backgammon setup for the traditional game, the gaming accoutrements are well known. The game is played on a flat board that is divided into twenty-four narrow triangular divisions referred to as "points". Points are indicated with an alternating color scheme, usually, although not invariably, black and white. Down the center of the board runs a ledge called the bar. Every player is allotted fifteen rounded checkers or counters, and each player has checkers of a specific color. In addition, dice (the singular form is called a die) and a dice-throwing cup is required. In addition, over the past eighty years a special die called the doubling cube has been a feature of backgammon gaming and it is brought into use when a player wants to double the stakes.
The backgammon setup for the online game is taken care of by the Internet sites hosting the game. All that the player requires is a modern computer that can support the backgammon software graphics, and a connection to the Internet. The player enters the address of a backgammon gaming site into their browser and downloads the software. The backgammon board and checkers and the dice are all presented in a high-quality 3-D reproduction on the player’s computer monitor. |
